TONY O'MALLEY: AN IRISH ARTIST IN CORNWALL

Next Previous

Tony O'Malley is one of Ireland's foremost painters of the last 50 years. Born in Callan, County Kilkenny he was a bank clerk for 25 years (while discreetly teaching himself to paint). In 1955 he visited St Ives in Cornwall; this was a revelation to him. Many of the foremost abstract artists of the day made up this diverse and vibrant community including Barbara Hepworth, Peter Lanyon, Bryan Wynter, Bernard Leach, Patrick Heron and Terry Frost as well as the poet Sydney Graham. O'Malley moved there in 1960 and became good friends with many of these characters. He also found a lasting romance with the Canadian painter Jane Harris. He remained in Cornwall for 30 years, the book is a chronicle of this highly creative era. Also included is an account by O'Malley of his growing up in rural Kilkenny. Illustrated throughout with original material (including 16 colour). Paperback - 96 pages. "An interesting read and the interviews with O'Malley are enlightening." BOOKS IRELAND "An excellent book on O'Malley; really captures the scene in St Ives and environs with sharp insights and an elegant style." PATRICK J. MURPHY (Former Chairman of the Irish Arts Council)
